Minister Abela holds more bilateral meetings in New York

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dačić and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Mutual Cooperation between the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) at the University of Malta and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia.

During a separate bilateral meeting with Jean Asselborn, Foreign Minister of Luxembourg, Minister Abela discussed ongoing challenges within the European Region, including the current situation in Libya and migration. The discussions resulted in the signing of a bilateral agreement on the Mutual Protection and Exchange of Classified Information between the Government of the Republic of Malta and the Government of Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Bilateral and regional issues were also discussed with the Foreign Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ayman Safadi. Both Ministers recalled the various high-level exchanges between Malta and Jordan, noting that these visits served to strengthen the excellent long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Another bilateral meeting was with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Srđan Darmanović. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Mutual Cooperation between the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) at the University of Malta and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro.

Moreover, Minister Abela held separate bilaterals with his Ukrainian counterpart Vadym Prystaiko and with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Cuba Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.

Minister Carmelo Abela also attended the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting. At this meeting Ministers adopted a set of recommendations, as mandated by Heads of Government at CHOGM 2015 which was held in Malta. These recommendations will serve as a bases to reform and modernize the Commonwealth Secretariat to be more responsive to the needs of its Member States.

In New York, Minister Carmelo Abela attended a number of events which included a breakfast dialogue themed “Unlocking the Mediterranean Generation’s Agency for Global Peace-Building and Climate Resilience”, the Ministerial Segment of the Group of Friends on Climate and Security, the Ministerial Breakfast for the “Uniting for Consensus” (UfC) Group, as well as the Alliance for Multilateralism Ministerial Meeting.

Minister Abela also co-moderated one of the Leaders Dialogues which were held as part of the SDG Summit along the Vice President of Indonesia, Muhammad Jusuf Kalla.
