On 13 June 2019, Malta, together with the United Nations’ Department on Economic and Social Affairs, organised a side-event on ‘Leave no Autistic Mother Behind: Autism and Motherhood – Experiences, Challenges and Positive Strategies’ in the margins of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Opening the event, H.E Ambassador Carmelo Inguanez, Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations, stated that it is important to empower both autistic persons and their families: autistic persons have to face society-created challenges. Lack of understanding and support from society can lead to situations where autistic parents and their children do not participate in society on an equal basis with others.

Ambassador Inguanez recalled the guiding principle of the CRPD ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’. Persons with a disability should lead all decisions and policies affecting their lives and future. Nevertheless, one should not underestimate the value of partnering with relevant stakeholders. This benefitted autistic persons.

Ambassador Inguanez was accompanied by Counsellor Dr Terence Sacco.
