Ms Hiroko Hisata, Assistant Director, Secretariat of the Headquarters for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Cabinet Secretariat of the Government of Japan visited Malta from 3 to 5 July, 2019. While in Malta, Ms Hisata discussed the Host Town Initiative following participation of Malta’s Olympic events on the occasion of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Host Town Initiative is aimed to introduce towns and cities all over Japan to the national teams that will participate in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo next year. More than 400 Japanese cities applied to welcome national athletes that will compete in the games – including Malta. This is a very good opportunity to showcase Japanese culture, customs, tradition and way of life while also creating connections and exchanges between the athletes and the locals.

Ms. Hisata discussed this initiative with the Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Japan, H.E Andre Spiteri and officials from the Commercial and Cultural Diplomacy Units within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion on the 4th of July. Later on that day, Ms Hisata also met with other entities and stakeholders at the offices of the Maltese Olympic Committee in Gzira. The entities were represented by Ms. Janet Grech Dimech, Marketing Manager for Japan, Malta Tourism Authority; Ms. Rose Made Mercieca, Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer, Sport Malta; Mr. Julian Pace Bonello, President of the Malta Olympic Committee; Mr. Joseph Cassar, Secretary General of the Malta Olympic Committee; and Professor John Grima, President - Malta Paralympic Committee.
