On Thursday, 27 September 2017, Hon Carmelo Abela, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, met Ms Pascale Moreau, the new Director of the European Bureau of the United Nations Agency on Refugees (UNHCR) after she assumed her new duties following her experience as UNHCR’s Representative in Turkey. The meeting was very cordial, with both sides agreeing that migration remains a challenge that requires the attention of the international community. Ms Moreau further outlined UNHCR’s ongoing work in preparation for the finalisation of the Global Compact on Refugees, which adoption is foreseen in 2018.

Both parties expressed concerns about the political and security situation in Libya, and the need to urgently address the protection of asylum-seekers in this country. UNHCR is currently engaging with the Libyan authorities and conducting a number of initiatives and hopes to be able to increase its operations in the region in the coming months. Ms Pascale praised Malta’s long-standing commitment to the better management of migration and protection of refugees, as well as to the excellent handling of files related to EU migration and asylum policy during Malta’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Minister Abela welcomed the excellent co-operation between the Maltese authorities and UNHCR and commended the hard work conducted by the UN Refugee Agency around the globe, and reassured Ms Moreau of Malta’s support to UNHCR in the coming months.
