Minister Abela visits Moscow

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela paid a three-day working visit to Russia. The Minister held political talks on pending bilateral issues between the two sides and global issues with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov.

 

During the visit, the Minister attended the inauguration of an exhibition of a recently-restored 18th century portrait of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia that normally adorns the Ambassadors’ Room of the Presidential Palace in Valletta.

 

While in Moscow, Minister Abela also held an exchange of views with Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the USSR and President of the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies (The Gorbachev Foundation), on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the summit held in Malta on the 2nd and 3rd December 1989. On a day marked by stormy weather and raging seas, together with then US President George H. W. Bush, Mr Gorbachev declared an end to the Cold War aboard the Soviet passenger liner Maxim Gorky in Marsaxlokk Harbour.

 

Additionally, the Minister visited works currently being carried out on a project comprising 5-star hotel and luxury residences that Corinthia is set to open in Moscow’s Ulica Tverskaya. The historical property houses the famous 19th century Filippov Bakery. The Minister was welcomed and shown around the site by Patrick Catania, Investment Manager of Corinthia Hotels in Russia, in the presence of representatives of the Moscow government.

 

Another initiative undertaken by the Foreign Minister is Moscow was the presentation of books in Maltese to the Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature. This library boasts a collection currently comprising about 5 million items, including books and periodicals, in more than 140 languages. Till now, however, it did not have any books in the Maltese language.

 

The Minister also visited the premises of Malta’s embassy and consulate general in Moscow, where he met with the staff.

 

Throughout his visit to Moscow, Minister Abela was accompanied by Malta’s ambassador to Russia, Pierre Clive Agius, and by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, Fiona Formosa.
