“The youth of the Middle East and the Mediterranean are catalysts for change” – Minister Carmelo Abela

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, Carmelo Abela travelled to Lugano, Switzerland to participate in The Middle East and Mediterranean (MEM) Summit. The summit was organized by the Università della Svizzera Italiana and consisted of an eight-day seminar and a two-day high-level public forum. The seminar sought to facilitate discussions and exchanges amongst young innovators of the Mediterranean region, with the aim of exploring alternative solutions, beyond national borders.


Minister Abela delivered a speech during a panel discussing ‘Change through dialogue: ministers and change-makers come together’. The Minister spoke to youth from the Middle East and the Mediterranean about the need to recognize them as catalysts for change.


He also thanked the Università della Svizzera Italiana, for the support provided during the preparatory Forum on Youth, Education and Mobility that was held in Malta in April within the context of the Summit of the Two Shores in Marseille. The Minister asserted that the Malta Forum, like the MEM Summit was characterized by its youth-led approach, and welcomed the organization of such initiatives, that provide a platform to empower the Mediterranean generation of today.


Minister Abela also held a bilateral meeting with his Swiss counterpart, Foreign Minister, Ignazio Cassis, in order to discuss further collaboration between Switzerland and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies. The ministers also discussed the political situation in Libya and the migration challenge in the Mediterranean.
