Reference Number:  , Press Release Issue Date: Mar 20, 2017

A meeting organized by the Consulate General of Malta for the Heads of Missions, representing EU countries, serving in Istanbul, was held recently in the Library of the Goethe Institute. This was the second of a series being held under Malta’s  Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Guest speaker for this meeting was Ambassador Christian Berger, Head of the European Union Delegation in Ankara and Ms Kasia Lach, Head of Migration Policy, within the Delegation.

During this meeting, chaired by Mr Franklin Aquilina, Consul General of Malta in Istanbul, relations between Turkey and the European Union were discussed at length, as well as regional issues and issues where both sides are working together, such as migration and humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees.

A consistent message during Ambassador Berger’s interventions was the willingness of the European Union to work with Turkey on all aspects, in mutual respect.

Ambassador Berger and Consuls General present expressed their appreciation towards Malta’s Presidency for bringing together an informative meeting and a distinguished guest. Such meetings help bringing EU Member States’ representatives in Istanbul closer to the EU Delegation, which, at the end, provides a more coherent representation of the bloc.
