Ambassador Philomena Meli has a long standing career in the field of international trade since the late seventies. After establishing a Trade Documentation Unit in the Central Bank of Malta in 1978, she moved on in 1987 to set up the then Malta External Trade Corporation (METCO) where she spent seventeen years in various posts.  In February 2004 she was appointed as a consultant on trade policy in the International Economic Relations Directorate of the Economic Policy Department of the Ministry of Finance. Thereafter she took up a position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an economic/trade diplomacy consultant in the then Directorate General European and Economic Affairs. In March 2010, she was appointed Head, External, Institutional Affairs and Trade Policy Unit at Malta Enterprise.  Since 2013, she has been employed at Malta Enterprise as an Advisor to the Chairman on various issues especially those related to trade and investment in the Euro Mediterranean area.

Ms Meli is a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Malta, a post she has been occupying since 2013.  She also held this position from 2003-2007.  In addition, she also served on the Board of Directors of the Employment and Training Corporation for the period June 2008 – March 2013.

Ms Meli also presently represents Malta Enterprise as one of the Vice-Presidents on the Board of ANIMA Investment Network, the cooperation platform for economic cooperation in the Mediterranean.

Ms Meli holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Economics from the University of Malta.
