The Ambassado​r

Mr. Giovanni Miceli joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 1st July 1977 and was attached to the Bilateral Division until 1987. He was posted to the Embassy of Malta in Paris where he served as First Secretary and Consul General from 1987 to 1991. He was afterwards seconded as Assistant Director to the Conflict Prevention Centre of the then-CSCE (Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe) in Vienna and later to the Department of Administration and Budget in the OSCE Secretariat. In 1994, he returned to Malta and was assigned the duties of Head of the Social and Humanitarian Section within the Multilateral Affairs Directorate.

On 19th January 2004, Mr. Miceli was appointed Director Multilateral Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with responsibility for Malta's relations with the United Nations Organisation and its Specialised Agencies, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Council of Europe and the Commonwealth. As Director Multilateral Affairs, he served as Chairman of the Sanctions Monitoring Board, Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO and Member of the National Authority for the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. He was the Head of Agenda Matters of the CHOGM 2005 Task Force in preparation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which was held in Malta in November 2005.

Following the restructuring of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 22nd March 2006 Mr. Giovanni Miceli was appointed Director, General Affairs and International Trade (GAIT) in the Economic and European Affairs Division within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was responsible for the issues, within the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, which particularly cover external relations and general policy questions. His Directorate covered the EU Institutional and Enlargement issues as well as legal transposition of the legislative items pertaining to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as lead Ministry. He was also responsible for economic and cultural diplomacy as well as for monitoring issues related to international trade, particularly the WTO.

In 2006, Mr. Miceli was nominated as Malta’s Focal Point for the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe and participated in the 12th and 13th Meeting of the Regional Table of the Stability Pact, held respectively in Bucharest, Romania (November, 2006) and Zagreb, Croatia (May, 2007). Mr. Miceli has also participated in various other Conferences in Malta and abroad.

With effect from 9th August 2007, Mr. Giovanni Miceli was appointed as Malta’s Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt, resident in Cairo. He was also Ambassador to the Republic of The Sudan, Malta's Formal Liaison Officer to the League of Arab States, the Representative of Malta to the African Union as well as Ambassador-designate to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Following his retirement from the Public Service of the Government of Malta on 1st February 2012, Ambassador Giovanni Miceli served as Member on various Selection Boards, while in April 2013 he was appointed on the Ministry’s Board of Review of Malta's Representations Overseas.

On 1st January 2014, Ambassador Giovanni Miceli was appointed as Adviser for International Relations at the House of Representatives, Parliament of Malta, a position which he still holds.

On 13th October 2014, Ambassador Giovanni Miceli presented his credentials as Malta’s Ambassador to Hungary, resident in Malta.
