The Bilateral Relations between

The Republic of Malta
and
The Republic of Poland
Maltese and EU Flags

The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Malta and the Republic of Poland were formally established over forty years ago. Since this establishment, their relations have never looked back and have been strengthened in particular after the accession of both countries to the European Union in 2004 and to Schengen in 2008.

The development of these bilateral relations led to several important visits including a State Visit to Poland in 2004 by H.E. Prof. Guido de Marco, President of Malta, to the President of Poland, Mr. Aleksander Kwasniewski as well as a State Visit of President Kwasniewski to Malta in March, 2004.

Other important visits included the Polish Prime Minister Mr. Donald Tusk’s visit to Valletta in October of 2009 and the visit of the Prime Minister of Malta Dr. Lawrence Gonzi to Warsaw in April of 2011 when he inaugurated the first ever Embassy of Malta in Poland.

There is ample scope for our respective Embassies to promote and strengthen the bilateral cultural ties.

Cultural links between Malta and Poland are best personified by the common colours of the Red and the White of the two national flags.  But the cultural ties go far beyond this.  In 2007, a Maltese-Polish Friendship Society was established with the aim to foster people-to-people links while a town twinning agreement was concluded between Gzira in Malta and Walbrzych in Poland.

The economic relations between the two countries are also very encouraging with statistics indicating an impressive expansion of trade and commerce. Tourism traffic between the two countries has also increased considerably and a new all-year-round flight has been established between Krakow and Malta starting in 2013.
