Madrid Embassy - Events in September

Reference Number:  , Press Release Issue Date: Oct 10, 2017

H.E. Mark Anthony Micallef, the Ambassador of Malta to Spain, has official inaugurated two new Maltese Honorary Consulates in the North of Spain on 19th and 20th September 2017. Mr Gabriel Baltar is the new Maltese Honorary Consul in Vigo, with jurisdiction over Galicia, whilst Mr Pablo Junceda is the new Honorary Consul in Oviedo, with jurisdiction over Asturias.

This is a significant milestone to further expand Malta’s presence around the entire territory of Spain, especially on the Northern coast which is 2000 km long and is an important region with tremendous prospects; thus continuing to expand Malta’s network in a meaningful way. These Honorary Consulates will also give a more substantial coverage to vessels flying the Maltese flag. The opening of these two new Honorary Consulates is also proof of our commitment towards Maltese nationals living in Spain as well as those travelling to Spain.

Earlier this month, Ambassador Micallef, in the presence of the new Honorary Consul Mr Gabriel Baltar, attended a concert by the St. Paul Choral Society, one of Malta’s leading polyphonic choirs that was held in Santiago de Compostela. Ambassador Micallef also inaugurated a photographic exhibition based on the work done by 17 Spanish photographers during a recent trip to Malta. The exhibition will remain open until the beginning of November in Las Tullas - former granaries of the former Royal Benedictine Monastery of San Martín Pinario in Santiago de Compostela.

During his visits to this important region, Ambassador Micallef also had the opportunity to meet several University entities and local authorities in order to enhance the cultural and educational aspirations of Malta and Spain.
