On the 25th of September 2017 the Maltese community in Belgium was invited for a reception at Dar Malta on the occasion of the 53rd Anniversary of Malta’s Independence. The reception was organised by the Embassy of Malta to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Permanent Representation of Malta to the EU.

The Minister for Equality and European Affairs, Hon. Helena Dalli and the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds and Social Dialogue, Hon. Aaron Farrugia attended the reception. Minister Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary Farrugia along with the Permanent Representative of Malta to the EU, H.E. Marlene Bonnici and the Ambassador of Malta to the Kingdom of Belgium, H.E. Ray Azzopardi addressed the audience on the occasion.

In his speech, Ambassador Azzopardi looked at Malta’s accomplishments since acquiring its Independence.  Malta’s Independence is not only a historic event but equally an event to be celebrated by the people, particularly in the social and economic fields.  This is  predominantly so through the enactment of various legislative bills in the past four years whereby the State treats its citizens with equality and non-discrimination based on their sex, belief, thought and ethnicity.  Amongst other things, the introduction of divorce, civil unions, equal marriage, the right for adoption by same-sex couples, the Gender Identity Bill and the Constitutional changes witness Malta’s commitments to foster independence.  Ambassador Azzopardi thanked and praised Minister Dalli for her dedication and hard work that led to the concept of independence broadly applied to all citizens.
