The Consulate General of Malta in Istanbul celebrated the 53rd Anniversary of Malta’s Independence by a reception, held at the centrally located CVK Park Bosphours Hotel, in Istanbul.

More than 200 guests, from the Maltese community living in Turkey, the Istanbul business community, the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, representatives of the Patriarch of Constantinople and other religious leaders, together with other distinguished guests were present. Mr Ismail Gultenkin, Deputy Governor of Istanbul, represented the Turkish Government.

In his address, Mr Franklin Aquilina, Consul General, referred to the political and economic progress Malta achieved since its Independence. Becoming a Republic, the closure of the military base, joining the European Union and successfully holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time, were events that materialized in a relatively short period of time.

Mr Aquilina also commemorated the 50th Aniversary from the establishment of biletaral relations between Malta and Turkey; relations that went from strength to strength over time. The Consul General also mentioned the opening of a new Maltese Embassy in Ankara, with Ambassador-Designate HE Carm Vassallo expected to present the Letters of Credentials to the President of the Republic of Turkey in the coming weeks.

In his intervention, Deputy Governor Gultekin emphasized relations between Malta and Turkey, describing them as positive and moving ahead at a consistent pace.

This event was sponsored by Malta Enterprise, GICG Malta, Yildiz Meşrubat and K YAPI and also featured in various magazines based in Istanbul.
