Newly appointed ambassadors meet the Minister for Foreign Affairs

Francisco Ribeiro Telles, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to Malta, and Olivier Shambevski, Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to Malta, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Foreign Affairs George W. Vella.

Ambassador Ribeiro Telles presented his Letters of Credence to the President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on 11 April 2017.

The meeting between Minister Vella and the Portuguese Ambassador focused on the excellent relations between the two countries. Issues of mutual interest pertaining to the European Union, and regional challenges faced by the two countries, were also discussed. 

Minister Vella and Ambassador Ribeiro Telles agreed that the two countries share common positions on issues of particular regional importance such as Libya and the Middle East Peace Process. Developments concerning migration in the Mediterranean also featured in the exchange of views.

Both sides reiterated their wish for the two countries to continue working closely together to reinforce the current cooperation and to explore new opportunities to further contacts on the political, commercial and people-to-people fronts.

Minister Vella also met with Olivier Shambevski, Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to Malta, as he presented his copie d’usage as the first Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to the Republic of Malta.

The main issues on the agenda were the political developments in Macedonia as well as Macedonia’s European aspirations. The dynamics in the Western Balkans and developments in the Mediterranean region were also discussed at some length.

Discussions also touched upon the recently established bilateral relations and possible future cooperation between the two sides.

Oliver Shambevski expressed his country’s appreciation for Malta’s support in its EU accession path. Other topics included developments in the Mediterranean and Western Balkan migration routes and common efforts to engender peace throughout the European continent as well as pave the way to further exchanges between the two regions. The Minister and the Ambassador also extensively discussed the enhancement of bilateral cooperation in various fields of mutual concern, such as political, economic, commercial and trade relations.
