Minister for Foreign Affairs
George W. Vella held a meeting with the Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee
of the National People’s Congress (NPC) of the People’s Republic of China,
Zhang Baowen and his delegation.
The Minister and the
Vice-Chairman underlined the longstanding and excellent bilateral
relations between the two countries. These relations have grown from
strength to strength over the years and, in this context, welcomed the 45th
anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Minister Vella spoke of
Malta-China relations as a successful cooperative effort marked by the numerous
agreements and protocols signed, specifically the Medium-Term Cooperation Plan
of 2014 which will continue to bring further progress and cooperation between
Malta and China in several sectors such as energy, finance, and tourism.
Vice-Chairman Baowen said that China shares this sentiment and noted that both
countries have enjoyed a traditional and prosperous friendship.
Reference was also made to the
‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative, which will lead to substantive investment
across Asia, Europe, and Africa, and which Malta is deeply privileged to be
involved in. Vice-Chairman Baowen expressed gratitude for Malta’s interest in
this initiative as well as for its founding member status in the Asian
Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
Minister Vella affirmed that
Malta will continue to be in favour of, and promote beneficial EU-China
relations so as to improve economic, cultural and people-to-people ties
especially during Malta’s current role at the helm of the EU Presidency.
Vice-Chairman Baowen thanked
Minister Vella for the fruitful discussion and expressed hope for continued
consensus, friendship and economic prosperity between the two peoples.
Also present at the meeting was
the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malta Jiang Jiang.
