The Maltese EU Presidency
organised a working breakfast at the Travellers Club, Pall Mall, this morning
with guest speaker the Rt. Hon. Hilary Benn, MP, the former Shadow Foreign
Secretary and currently the Chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee
on the Exiting of the EU. The Deputy Heads of the 26 EU Missions in London
attended the meeting.
After introducing the guest
speaker, Mr Mario Buttigieg, the Deputy High Commissioner provided the
background for the discussion by referring to the various developments relating
to Brexit that occurred over the past 24 hours, including the vote at the House
of Commons and the immediate approval by the House of Lords. Mr Benn provided
his thoughts on the current situation. He said that the timing for this working
lunch was impeccable and that the House of Lords cleared the European Union
(Notification of Withdrawal) bill before this morning’s intervention by Mr
Hilary Benn. Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to trigger Article 50
during the last week of March.
